General Information

This workshop is an introduction to using high-performance computing systems effectively. We obviously can’t cover every case or give an exhaustive course on parallel programming in just two days of teaching time. Instead, this workshop is intended to give students a good introduction and overview of the tools available and how to use them effectively.

By the end of this workshop, students will know how to:

  • Identify problems an HPC system can help solve
  • Use the UNIX shell (also known as terminal or command line) to operate a computer, connect to an HPC system, and write simple shell scripts.
  • Submit and manage jobs on an HPC system using a scheduler, transfer files, and use software through environment modules.

Location

Where: Paterson’s Land, The University of Edinburgh, Holyrood Rd, Edinburgh EH8 8AQ. Get directions with OpenStreetMap or Google Maps.

When: 28 June 2023.

Requirements: Participants must bring a laptop with a Mac, Linux, or Windows operating system (not a tablet, Chromebook, etc.) that they have administrative privileges on.

They should have a few specific software packages installed (listed below).

  • The room is wheelchair / scooter accessible.
  • Accessible restrooms are available.

Materials will be provided in advance of the workshop and large-print handouts are available if needed by notifying the organizers in advance.
